Burnover
Recently we had a fire training day and one of our lessons was how to survive a burnover. To do the lingo, a burnover happens when you are in a truck, a bulldozer, a car, or on foot as a wild fire front goes over you and through. The boss showed us this video of where a fire fighting scenario had gone wrong. Triggers, folks - anyone with fire trauma need not watch this. However no one was seriously injured here.
This video was used as an instructional 'what not to do' (sorry guys who were involved), using the LACES acronym. Lookout, which includes anticipation of wind changes/fire behaviour. Awareness, of what is going on. Communications. (The truck in front had no water) Escape routes, like where are they. Safety zones, perhaps some cleared areas up the road.
It's sort of like these things happen, not to belittle it, but they do. Farm boys do it all the time, tractors, lorries, stuff like this, don't look, rev up and go. Doris Lessing said her son went to Canada and became a fire look-out and she used to think of him up in the trees. When I read it I thought of you up in the trees,
Eeek! What a time to reverse into the truck behind.
ReplyDeleteIt's crazy footage but you can see how that would go down, yes?

ReplyDeleteYes, you can see how it all played out and you’re right Rachel, it’s not to belittle, but a fine training vid.
DeleteTerrifying. I'm going to have to Google 'what to do' videos now because this is not an abstract possibility for many of us in Oz.
ReplyDeleteMum bought me a fire blanket, which is a start!
